The downside of owl vision is that they are very farsighted, and cannot focus well on objects that are within a couple of inches. For example, Barn Owls can see a mouse at 6-7 feet with an illumination the equivalent of the light of a match a mile away. Indeed, owls have 5 times as many rods as humans, one million rods per square millimeter! As a result, they can see 35-100 times better than we can at night. For owls, it’s all about rods! Faced with low light levels, you need lots and lots of rods. Cones are important to bees since they have a great need to see colors. We discussed rods and cones of bee eyesight in an earlier Hunt. That information is then passed on to the brain. This gives the owl a chance to collect twice the light for discerning the image. Light collection is also aided by a reflective surface behind the retina which reflects the image back after it has passed through the eye. 0003% of our body weight and are held in place with muscles. Owls have extremely large eyes, in a very small skull. So, the story of the Owl will come in two parts first we will describe all the functions that are carried out in the head and the next issue will conclude the tale with details of what happens in the rest of the owl’s body. This treasure hunt proved to be so fascinating and interesting that the tale could not be told in a single issue. Specifically, owls have incredible sight, a neck that can rotate its head a full 270 degrees and amazing hearing. The next obvious question is, “How does an owl hunt in the dark?” The answer is that its head, and all the elements of the head have evolved precisely for this very purpose that is, hunting in the dark. Why? Because many owls hunt for rodents, and rodents are active at night. However, a majority of the owl family are nocturnal creatures and do most of their hunting when light levels are low. (More about this when we look at owl sight.) You can quickly determine the hunting habits of an owl by the color of its eyes black or brown hunt at night, yellow hunt at dawn and dusk and orange hunt in the daytime. Our tiniest owls are the Burrowing and the Western Screech Owls, about 10 inchesĪlthough we think of owls as hunting only at night, that is not the case. Significantly smaller are the Barn, Short-eared and Long-eared Owls, all of which are between 13 and 16 inches. The largest of our hooting avians is the Great-horned Owl at 23 inches. Over the many decades we have been collecting sightings data, these are the most owl species ever recorded, at one time, and there are some species we have rarely, if ever seen! Western Screech Owl The last Christmas Bird Count recorded a phenomenal six separate species of owls on More Mesa. However, they may be more difficult to see, although easier to hear … especially if you are willing to venture out onto More Mesa at night. Loot the body to retrieve the map, where a diagram of a room with three circular objects in the middle is revealed.Many members of this treasure’s family live on More Mesa. Take the Deep Storage elevator from the main floor to reach the location and you'll find Zachary West's body. Known as the Hordinbaffle Flagdastreous Map, it can be found in the Arboretum, which is near the airlock on the first floor. Either way, you must find all the files.įirst, you must find Zachary West's map. Gamemaster Abigail Foy handed some of the maps to the players in person, while others may have files on their workstation. You should find an email called "Treasure Hunt." Open it to receive the objectives and begin the quest. Here's how you can find it.įirst, to initiate the Prey side quest, head to the Crew Quarters and investigate Danielle Sho's computer. Hidden in the game are four treasure maps that were given to a group of people involved in a game of Fatal Fortress – Danielle Sho, Zachary West, Elias Black, and Emma Beatty. Hidden within Prey is an optional quest that really rewards the obsessive completionist gamers.
